The 2024 Subaru WRX will have a CD player as a throwback optional extra

Nostalgia lovers will be delighted to learn that the new Subaru WRX can be fitted with a CD player as an optional extra.

The latest generation WRX has a number of ‘finishing touches’ available, allowing buyers to add all manner of extras, such as mud flaps, an engine underguard, a first aid kit, and carbon fiber trunk trim.

But the most interesting – at least for 90s kids – is the optional CD player that can be neatly fitted under the center console’s armrest.

The CD player works a little differently from the ones you may remember 

Due to its location, the CD player works slightly differently from the ones you may have had in your car back in the day.

Rather than pushing the disk into the player horizontally, it is inserted downwards, or vertically.

Of course, there’s been a huge shift to downloads and streaming services across the last couple of decades – but those of you who still have a CD collection knocking about might think the $375 CD Player Kit is worth splashing out on.

If you still have the CDs anyway.

Getting it fitted at the point of purchase is likely to be a much cheaper option than attempting to have a CD player retrofitted into your motor.

Extras aside, the newest WRX has remained loyal to its manual transmission as standard.

Interestingly, while this can be swapped out for automatic transmission, it would actually cost a little less than having a CD player fitted – around $75 less, in fact.

With or without the CD player, the WRX is an impressive car

Subaru, which has recently dipped its toe into the flying-car market, has fitted the WRX with a turbo-charged 2.4-liter engine, which is capable of producing 270 horsepower and 350Nm of torque at 2000-5200rpm.

Depending on the model, the car comes with either 17-inch or 18-inch tires, and are fitted with adaptive dampers and upgraded Brembo brakes with larger pads and rotors, which the carmaker says provides better stopping force and pedal feel.

Inside – along with your optional CD player – the WRX has 11.6-inch tablet-like touchscreen ‘infotainment’ system as standard.

So you can seamlessly blend old with new as you check out important information and stats as well as control your digital music selection.

The tS models also come with Drive Model Select, which features a range of customizable aspects such as steering feel, throttle responsiveness, and electronic control dampers. 

Smart stuff.

Maybe it’s time to dig out those old CDs.
