The Cessna Citation X+ holds the current title for the fastest private jet in the world with an incredible top speed.
Maxing out at Mach 0.935 (1,154 km/h/717 mph) – it’s as close as you can get to the speed of sound (Mach 1) in a private aircraft.
However, other private jets on the horizon could soon surpass this speed and relieve the Cessna of the title.

Cessna Citation X+ top speed
Concorde used to travel at a top speed of Mach 2.04 (1,354 mph or 2,180 km/h) at cruise altitude, over twice the speed of sound.
However, two decades after the supersonic aircraft’s retirement due to safety and profitability concerns – the Cessna Citation X+ can get the closest to that speed for a private jet.
However, despite its impressive speed, its range is somewhat limited as far as private jets go.
The private jet can fly up to 3,460 nautical miles (5,568.33 km) at a stretch.
That’s just enough mileage to get from New York to Western Europe.
The private jet was first brought to market in 2012.
It was a successor and upgraded version of the Cessna Citation X, which has been flying since 1996.
On a smaller scale, a young pilot recently raced his girlfriend traveling from Atlanta to Nashville in a Boeing 737 in his tiny Cessna 150.
Other contenders for fastest private jet
While impressive for a private jet, the speed of the Cessna Citation X+ is certainly not the fastest aircraft.
It’s a mere fraction of the speed of the fastest plane ever, the SR-72 ‘Son of Blackbird’, which is said to be set for active service by 2030.
However, it’s thought that the upcoming Bombardier Global 8000 could reach speeds of Mach 0.94 (1,160 km/h.721 mph).
