DIY Corvette go-kart - Poorvette

This Corvette go-kart has been made from scratch using the shell of a children’s bed.

The man behind the build, Gilbert from Texas, calls his creation the ‘Poorvette’ because “when you can’t buy an actual Corvette, you build your own”.

Gilbert, who goes by gilbertr300 online, built the Poorvette with a fully detailed interior.

It has a working gear stick, steering wheel, dashboard with speedometer and tachometer, and of course, a racing seatbelt.

And to power the children’s bed, he took an engine from a Honda CBR600 F4 bike, which explains why it’s so loud.

The Texan built the Poorvette to be able to do burnouts, donuts, and drifting and says “it’s proven it can handle that quite well”.

As for its top speed, he says “it’s probably faster than I’m willing to go in it”.

“Maybe someday I’ll take it to an eighth-mile drag strip to get a little taste of what it’s capable of doing,” he said.

Gilbert, who is a professional automotive technician, says building go-karts like the Poorvette is a beloved hobby of his.

It’s not his first crazy build either.

“I build them for fun, but I do sell them off once I’ve had my fun and am ready to move on to the next build,” he said.

Gilbert says there’s just one thing the little Corvette go-kart can’t do and that’s driving in reverse.

“But that’s something I can live with,” he said.

“The sound of a street bike on a go-kart is a sound that is unrivaled by any motor with reverse,” he said.

“Plus, who needs reverse when you can do a 180 drift?”
