What qualified Tesla to top the list of most American cars?
There are many things that people take into account when they purchase a car.
For most people, cost factors into the equation – this is the same whether you own a Mercedes-Benz, a BMW, or an Aston Martin.
Others may lean towards a car based on its look or its range.

But for some, patriotic duty is the main motivator.
For many Americans, they want to know that they’re supporting their country when they spend their money.
Globally, the US is second in terms of manufacturing cars, coming in behind China.
In 2023, the US produced around 10.6 million cars and trucks, which represented a six percent increase on the previous year.
A lot of Americans would prefer to buy a car made in their own country rather than a competing country like China or Germany.
According to a poll by Cars.com, 56 percent of in-market shoppers wanted to buy American-made cars, and more than half were willing to pay 10 percent or more over their planned budget to do so.

The hope is that supporting the US automotive industry would keep jobs at home.
So what criteria does a car have to meet to qualify as the ‘most American’?
According to Cars.com itself, the car is measured on five criteria – assembly location, parts content, engine origin, transmission origin, and US manufacturing workforce.
The more each element is oriented towards the US, the higher a car scores – and the more American it is deemed.
The ranking in full
The Tesla Model Y topped the list, as one of three Teslas to appear in the top 10.
The Model S and Model X came in at fourth place and ninth place respectively.

Other brands well represented on the list included Honda, Volkswagen, and Toyota.
Of the top ranking cars, four were EVs and the remaining six had internal combustion engines.
Here’s the complete top ten list:
- Tesla Model Y
- Honda Passport
- Volkswagen ID.4
- Tesla Model S
- Honda Odyssey
- Honda Ridgeline
- Toyota Camry
- Jeep Gladiator
- Tesla Model X
- Lexus TX
In 2023, Tesla had blocked out all four top spots.

Whilst the Model Y, S, and X all featured in both years’ rankings, the Model 3 was noticeably absent in the most recent line-up.
It’ll be interesting to see how the ranking pans out in 2025.
