This junkyard supertruck is super cheap, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be super fast too.

Even when put on a racetrack against one of the fastest trucks of the 1990s in a drag race, it has a few tricks up its sleeve.

The competitor in question is the GMC Syclone, capable of running a quarter mile in 14.1 seconds.

With eye-watering stats like that, how is a junkyard truck meant to stand a chance?

How did this junkyard supertruck make it to a drag race track?

Tony Angelo from the Stay Tuned YouTube channel wanted to build a racer on the cheap.

He got his hands on a $1,000 Chevrolet S10, which was fitting as this was the base for the Syclone too.

Next he brought in a 4.3-liter V6 engine and the all-wheel drivetrain from an Astro van.

In order to give his creation a boost, Angelo would need to acquire a turbo kit.

Fortunately, he snagged one from Amazon for $750.

He’d essentially built the Syclone’s equal, but about five percent of the cost – with Syclones costing up to $70,000 in some cases.

Being frugal is all well and good, but the real test would be out on the race track.

How would this truck hold up against a Syclone in a drag race?

As Angelo himself said, it was ‘put up or shut up time.’

Drag races are always good at making people sit on the edge of their seats.

We previously put a $4,000 fake Range Rover up against the real deal, and it was entertaining – despite the predictable result.

How the truck fared out on the track

It took a year to build up the truck and the moment of truth had arrived.

Pulling up to the starting line, Angelo told his viewers: “It’s finally time to see if this thing can take on a real legendary GMC Syclone.

“Have we built something that can outdo the legend at its own game?

“I’m excited….a little bit nervous…this truck is finicky, it’s been working like garbage until this afternoon.”

Right from the get go, the Syclone had the edge and sped ahead, leaving Angelo in the dust.

Fortunately, they’d agree beforehand to go three times, so redemption was still in sight.

On the second race, Angelo pulled ahead and won by a hair.

It wasn’t a total slam duck by any means, it was a close-run thing.

By Angelo’s own estimation, he won by ‘about half a car’.

The third race would be the decider after all.

This time around, the victory was decisive – Angelo’s truck had it.

Talk about a real underdog story.

Angelo was understandably ecstatic: “Let’s go! It’s faster than the 1991 legend, for a quarter of the price!

“That truck [1991 Syclone] drives so much nicer and looks so much better, but this did the thing.”

Drag races will continue to grab people’s attention, no matter where they take place.

But if they’re taking place on the streets of Virginia – like this Lamborghini Aventador and Cybertruck – don’t expect the police to be all too happy about it.
