This YouTuber bought a used cheap Tesla Model Y, but it started to look less like a bargain as the costs starting piling up.

He used a video on his YouTube channel to expose the true cost of ownership for an EV that seemed initially like a real bargain.

On top of purchasing the car, he got it using a high-interest loan which he described as a ‘stupid decision all around.’

He seemed ultimately quite disappointed with his purchase, wondering if the huge price he paid was due to the quality of Tesla cars or his own bad luck.

The true cost of a ‘cheap’ Tesla Model Y

American YouTuber AMG Ree was pleased to have purchased a used Tesla Model Y for $50,900. It was clearly a bargain for an EV with reviews as good as they are.

However, the maintenance and repair bills soon started piling up. So the YouTuber made it his mission to share the true costs associated with owning a used Tesla like this one.

Initially the $50,900 price tag didn’t encompass everything.

The dealer fee cost $499, the sales tax cost $1,889, the title fee came to $142 and he had an electronic registration fee of $150. Just buying and owning the car, cost the YouTuber $53,723.

In order to buy the EV, AMG Ree traded in his 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, getting only $24,400 for it. He was disappointed with this, hoping he’d have got more for it.

The YouTuber signed onto a loan with a 12.6 percent interest to finance the EV, a decision he regrets.

“This was a stupid decision all around, but you only live once and I figured I’d refinance shortly after,” he said.

Maintenance and repairs were super expensive

Once the YouTuber started driving the EV, he had to make a lot of replacements very quickly. The underbody panel cracked and set him back $217.

He then had to replace the tires in April 2023, but they were the wrong tires and cost him $1,061. When he got the correct EV tires, they cost a further $940.

He had more issues with the tires over the years costing him a further $4,000. Something he described as ‘just a big waste of money.’

Before his loan with the very big interest rate, the total costs of his used Tesla Model Y set the YouTuber back almost $60,000.

The high maintenance and repair fees left the YouTuber slightly disappointed, asking himself an important question.

“Was I just unlucky, or are these cars a bit fragile?” he mused.

What do you think? Are used Teslas a bargain or a money pit?
