The Twisted TVE is a Land Rover Defender, but not as we know it

Say hello to the Twisted TVE – an all-electric Land Rover Defender.

You don’t need to rub your eyes – you read that correctly.

Yes, it may look like a relatively normal Defender 90, but it’s actually an EV.

The Defender 90 started life out as an ‘XS’ spec, but has since received an EV conversion from the specialists over at Twisted.

The Twisted TVE now features a bespoke TVE electric drivetrain.

Unlike other electric resto-mods, Twisted has used brand new OEM standard parts rather than parts salvaged from crash-damaged vehicles.

The battery is housed entirely within the chassis rails, so there’s no loss of load space either.

Twisted’s brand mantra is ‘the best made better’.

They have taken what is a quintessentially British classic and not only made it better, but also brought it up-to-date.

It’s no secret the Defender has always been the ultimate go-anywhere vehicle.

But with the Twisted TVE, you’ve got a vehicle capable of driving through the city or venturing off the beaten track, while leaving a carbon footprint a Toyota Prius could only dream of.

And it manages to do this while retaining the charm that the iconic Land Rover Defender is so fondly known for.

Twisted TVE performance

With 268 bhp and a range of around 120+ miles, this Defender still maintains all of its off-road credentials, including a Hi/Lo box, differential lock and wading depth.

There are two drive modes available: ‘Eco’ and ‘Sport’.

Both have different characteristics benefitting either range or performance and use regenerative braking to either increase range or rolling resistance.

The Twisted TVE’s progressive suspension system gives it a fantastically controlled and predictable feel while delivering a supremely engaging drive.

The batteries have been mounted down low, keeping the center of gravity balanced, not top heavy and wallowy.

Twisted TVE exterior

Twisted has worked its magic on the exterior, too.

The Defender 90 TVE is finished in Corris gray metallic and has undergone a conversion to a hard top.

It’s fitted with Twisted’s signature 18” classic black wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich all terrain tyres.

Stopping power is provided by Twisted Alcon performance brakes: 6 pot front brakes and 4 pot rears.

Inside the Twisted TVE

The inside of the Defender 90 TVE is equally as special, with the Recaro seats trimmed in black nappa with a contract green stitch.

The dash and door cards have been treated to the Twisted treatment, as has the cubby box which is trimmed with leather and lined with Alcantara.

The steering wheel has been swapped out for a Twisted by Moto Lita wheel, allowing for more space and better driver control than the standard bulky item.

The standard media has also been replaced with an Alpine 7” touchscreen headunit with bluetooth, DAB radio, satellite navigation, reverse camera, and Apple CarPlay.

Beneath this sits a touchscreen control module for the vehicle, with the standard gear levers having been rendered useless.

A quick touch of the screen and surrounding buttons allows forward or reverse gears to be selected, along with hi/lo box or diff lock.
