A woman has been roasted online after asking how to properly use the handbrake in her car.
The young Australian woman called Emily took to TikTok to ask users if she really needed to use her handbrake or if it was unnecessary.
The video went viral and she got thousands of responses.
While some told her she was doing the right thing, others accused her of using it wrong and actually causing damage to her car.

A slew of self-proclaimed car experts told her off for misusing the brake by putting her car in park, not neutral, before pulling the handbrake.
“When you put your car in park and then put your handbrake on, the entire weight of the car is on the gearbox,” Jean McDonald said.

He said drivers needed to put their car in neutral first before pulling the handbrake on.
“That way, the weight of the car is resting on the handbrake and not the gearbox,” he said.
Once it was in neutral and the handbrake was on, McDonald said it was ok to put the car in park before turning it off.
A bunch of people in the comments said they were also making the same ‘mistake’ and had no idea it was wrong.
“I’ve been driving for six years – glad I learned this now! Better late than never,” one said.
But others on the platform told people to totally disregard the advice.
“It doesn’t make a difference,” one said.
“The gears in there will wear down eventually, but they’re not going to wear down before the whole car rots out.”

Another user described the advice as “a load of rubbish”.
“All the huge forces go through the gearbox when you’re driving, it’s 100% not going to hurt [the car],” they said.
Is the handbrake even necessary?
Emily’s video was made in response to an American woman’s video in which she said she never used her handbrake and her family didn’t either.
Her comments were filled with other Americans admitting the same.
Since then, TikTok has been inundated with videos about the handbrake and how it should be used.
