As things stand, McLaren is the only sports car manufacturer with no SUV in its line-up.

However, that’s going to change soon because the British marque is currently working on one.

Not only is this going to be McLaren’s first-ever SUV – it is also going to be the brand’s first fully electric vehicle.

It all started with Michael Leiters taking over as CEO last summer.

With the new CEO, the company did a complete 180 on SUVs – having previously stated it didn’t want to make one.

However, at the end of the day business is business and luxury SUVs sell like hot cakes.

Even Ferrari eventually caved in to the trend and built the Purosangue.

And by the way, Leiters is the man who oversaw the development of the Purosangue at Ferrari and he helped make the Cayenne when he was working for Porsche.

With the as yet unnamed SUV, McLaren will join the growing list of sports / luxury car brands who make SUVs.

Even Lotus joined the bandwagon with the Eletre.

However, we upcoming SUV will more than just a family vehicle with diluted sporting credentials.

Leiters himself made it clear that the new SUV will still retain the brand’s DNA.

When compared to other McLaren vehicles, the SUV will focus a bit more on comfort and luxury.

The interior will be more spacious, and it will likely feature an additional screen for the passenger.

Even the infotainment system will be more user-friendly as the current one is heavily track-focused.

Speaking of which, the SUV will deliver at least 700 hp.

Although rumor has it it could be even more powerful than that with 800 hp.

So when is this happening?

The SUV will be announced in late 2024 and it should be ready by 2025 or 2026 at the latest.
