Twitter users vow to boycott X and move to Threads if forced to pay

Twitter users are vowing to boycott the site if Elon Musk puts it behind a paywall.

The billionaire yesterday revealed he was considering charging every user “a small monthly payment”, saying it was “the only defense against vast armies of bots”.

Unsurprisingly, people weren’t exactly thrilled about the proposal.

Musk said the “small monthly payment” would cost less than the current premium plan of $8 per month but didn’t specify how much it would actually be.

In response to the news, users flocked to the site to warn Musk they would be gone if he went ahead with the plan.

“You’ve already turned this platform into a cesspool of misogyny, racism, antisemitism, and fascism. I’ll bid adieu before I pay you a cent to be here,” one said.

“I would not pay just to use the Twitter app. That would be the last straw,” another said.

Another said the billionaire was on the right track if he wanted to send Twitter to its grave.

“There really is no doubt that he simply wants to kill the platform,” they said.

“We create the content for free which Musk relies upon… without us, he has no product, no audience, no advertisers, no business,” another said.

And then there’s this man, who made his total disdain for the idea clear:

Others threatened they’d be logging out of Twitter and onto Threads in a heartbeat if forced to pay.

“I won’t pay to use X. So if Elon paywalls it, you can find me on the sidewalk yelling at clouds. Or on Threads,” one said.

While Musk didn’t say when the payment plan would be introduced, or whether it was even 100 percent going ahead, it didn’t really come as a surprise.

Musk has been hell-bent on ridding the site of bots since he bought it for $44 billion.

He also hasn’t been shy about asking users to stump up payment for various features, like the blue checkmark that anyone can now pay for.
