Jacob Co Gotham City Batman watch caseback + dial

This ‘Gotham City’ wristwatch by Jacob & Co was made for Batman himself.

It’s mighty expensive, coming in with a hefty $220,000 price tag, but it is also a technical masterpiece.

Jacob Arabo, founder of Jacob & Co., is never out of ideas, is he?

His timepieces are always interesting and there’s an often an element of craziness that makes them even more compelling.

Every component of the Gotham City watch is designed with Batman in mind.

The crown, for example, is decorated with the Batsignal and covered with a rubber band with a pattern that’s similar to the tire tread in the Batmobile.

It is powered by a flying tourbillon movement and the little ‘cages’ where the tourbillon is located are reminiscent of Batman’s grappling hooks.

The dial features a black-on-black color combo, with the exception of the silver grey apertures and the yellow outline of the Bat emblem.

Speaking of which, the onyx Bat logo on the dial is covered with pigments of SuperLumiNova, which makes it glow blue in the dark.

As ever, the face is so complicated you can hardly use it to tell the time but that’s beside the point.

Like many other timepieces in the industry, the Gotham City is designed to be a work of art rather than a time-telling machine.

The watch is conspicuous and discreet at the same time because despite the sheer size of the titanium case (45.5 mm), the blacked-out colorway makes it look deceivingly smaller.

Or you can get the rose gold version, which is a lot more flashy.

As a whole, you’d almost be tempted to call it ‘subtle’.

Mind you, the caseback is not subtle at all, because it features a black Batman sketch against a shiny yellow background, penned by Korean-American comic book artist Jim Lee.

Production is limited to 36 pieces and as you can imagine, the watch is already trading at a premium in the pre-owned market.
