The Super Bowl MVP used to receive a free car, but Jalen Hurts won’t get one

  • The Super Bowl MVP used to receive a free car for their exploits on the field
  • Jalen Hurts – who won the MVP this year – will sadly not get a free car
  • The Super Bowl MVP has not been awarded a free car since 2015

Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts must be feeling more than a little pleased with himself today.

During the game, the Philadelphia Eagles took revenge against the Kansas City Chiefs for their loss two years ago, dismantling their AFC rivals 40-22.

The Texas native also scooped the MVP award for his performance, winning the Pete Rozelle Trophy for his efforts in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Unfortunately, one thing he did not win was a free car.

Super Bowl MVP used to receive more than just a trophy

Up until 2016, the MVP of the Super Bowl would not only get their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the Pete Rozelle Trophy – they also used to win a free car for their efforts.

This tradition started in 1967, when Bart Starr – quarterback for the Green Bay Packers – won a Chevrolet Corvette for winning the game’s biggest prize. Over the years, Chevrolet and Cadillac have been the biggest givers.

In fact, since the early 2000s, five Cadillac Escalades have been awarded, with two Chevrolet Corvettes also awarded to the Most Valuable Player.

In 2015, Tom Brady was the last person to win this prize for his efforts in leading the New England Patriots to victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl 49.

That year, Brady famously gifted his shiny new red Chevrolet truck to Malcolm Butler, the Patriots cornerback who completed the famous goal-line interception in the final play of the game to secure another ring for the Patriots.

That decision might have played a part in what was to come.

Jalen Hurts will not be getting a free car

Because – since then – things have changed with the NFL.

South Korean giant Hyundai was the official car of the Super Bowl from 2016 until 2019, and Ford took over the honor in 2022.

However, the MVP has not been awarded a new vehicle in that time.

So – for now – Jalen might not be driving home from New Orleans, but he will still carry the trophies happily with him.
