Meta’s chief AI scientist predicts smartphones will be obsolete within 10-15 years

The AI hype continues to change people’s beliefs, and the chief AI scientist at Meta says that we won’t be using smartphones in the next 10-15 years.

What then? Because smartphones are an integral part of most of our lives and can surprisingly manage everything we do.

Well, Yann LeCun, VP and Chief AI Scientist at Meta said that augmented reality glasses would replace smartphones.

If you take a step back and look at most tech products today, there’s one thing common in all of them.

They all mention ‘artificial intelligence capabilities’ as a feature or a service.

Since every major tech company is doubling down on AI, it’s not that hard to imagine a future without smartphones.

However, there’s a slight problem with that.

Ditching smartphones would essentially mean losing the ability to interact with any app or service directly.

In other words, a smart assistant would do everything for you, but you would have to ask it.

While that adds to the convenience, is it really something that can replace our physical interaction with smartphones?

“The last thing we might want is intelligent virtual assistants that help us in our daily lives. So today all of us here are carrying a smartphone in our pockets, 10 years from now or 15 years from now we’re not going to have smartphones anymore, we’re going to have augmented reality glasses,” LeCun said in a conference.

He added, “The computer will still be in our pockets, but we’ll talk to our glasses and the glasses will display the content.”

While it’s a statement from two years ago, Meta is on track to create that future with the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

And that’s not even the tip of the iceberg.

Several newer companies are creating artificial intelligence-enabled products that you can use independently from your phones to perform everyday tasks.

For instance, the Humane AI pin is a wearable pin with a projector that shows a small screen on your hand and does what you need using voice commands and a camera.

There’s also the Rabbit R1, a personal assistant device that recently became popular among enthusiasts.

With major companies like OpenAI making AI smarter every day, the hype isn’t going down.

There’s no doubt that smartphones aren’t evolving as much as they used to nowadays, but is it time for them to retire?
