The Porsche 928 – the car originally intended to replace the iconic Porsche 911 – can now be picked up for a bargain price.

The Porsche 928 grand tourer was launched back in 1978 and won European Car of the Year the year of its release.

Production ended in 1995, with a little over 61,000 examples created during that time.

Today, the car isn’t as well known as the 911 – and often comes with a much lower price tag.

The Porsche 928 had a front-mounted V8

If you were asked to think of a Porsche model, there’s a good chance the first car that came to mind would be a Porsche 911

While it may seem hard to believe now, back in the 1970s, the German carmaker was considering a replacement for its flagship vehicle.

The Porsche 928 was created in response to the changing automotive industry at the time.

Amid the backdrop of the 1970s oil crisis, Porsche bosses began to consider creating a luxury grand tourer that offered better fuel efficiency than its previous offerings.

Its creators wanted to blend the sort of performance and handling you’d expect from a sports car with the comfort and quality you’d find in a luxury car – sounds pretty good, right?

And so, the 928 grand tourer was born.

The 928 came with a front-mounted V8 engine – a first for the carmaker – and could hit impressive speeds of up to 171mph (275km/h), while also offering heaps of space and interior options.

The year it was launched, it won European Car of the Year and was hailed as a ‘supercar’ by The Autocar in 1980.

The car was discontinued in the 1990s

Despite being released to positive reviews and acclaim, sales of the 928 were initially pretty sluggish.

This was partly due to the fact that the 928 cost more than other Porsche models and wasn’t helped by the fact that the engine had moved to the front, which appeared to put off some Porsche purists.

However, the car still enjoyed an 18-year-long production run with several different variants releasing during that time including the 928 S and the 928 GTS.

In total, 61,506 examples were made across its 18 year run – and while it didn’t quite capture car lovers the way the 911 did, the vehicle still gained a solid following.

If you wanted to get your hands on one today, there’s a good chance you could grab yourself a bargain.

The average sale price of a 928 today, according to classic.com, is just $38,483.

Of course, this can shift dramatically depending on its age, model variant, and condition – a 928 GTS, for example, has an average selling price of $95,210.

Nonetheless, if you shop around, you may be able to snap up a bit of automotive history for a lot less than you might expect.
