Elon Musk says he may ban Apple devices after iOS announcement

Apple had a massive event yesterday announcing groundbreaking features coming to the iPhone via an iOS update – and one of them included a ChatGPT integration in Siri — which Elon Musk didn’t like and now wants to ban Apple devices in all his companies.

You heard that right — Musk thinks that letting Apple give users’ data to OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is ‘unacceptable.’

In response to the tech giant’s announcement, the Tesla CEO raised his concern shortly after the live event ended.

Siri gets smarter with ChatGPT

Tim Cook’s company announced several AI features coming to iOS 18 at the annual WWDC event on June 10.

Interestingly, its version of AI has the name ‘Apple Intelligence’ instead of the familiar artificial intelligence moniker.

One of these new features includes a full-fledged Siri update, which makes the personal assistant smarter.

The tech giant recently signed a deal with OpenAI to include ChatGPT in iOS 18, and everyone saw it coming.

Musk, however, feels that letting OpenAI access user data on iPhones is intrusive.

He took the issue to his social media platform X in a series of posts.

If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation.

And if that doesn’t seem enough, the xAI and Tesla CEO will also ask any visitors to his company’s offices to check their iPhones at the reception, where they will stay locked in a Faraday cage.

Elon Musk doesn’t want OpenAI to get user data from iPhones

“Apple using the words ‘protect your privacy’ while handing your data over to a third-party AI that they don’t understand and can’t themselves create is *not* protecting privacy at all,” he said while replying to Marques Brownlee’s post about Apple Intelligence.

Intrusive or not, Musk stands by his claims and it sort of makes sense — considering his xAI platform is a direct rival to OpenAI.

Moreover, xAI is the reason he became the world’s richest person again after being dethroned recently.

Shortly after he was done with the online rants, some of his posts got hit with Community Notes.

For context, Community Notes are basically fact-checks that verified users on X can add to provide context.

It seems that Elon Musk misunderstood how ChatGPT will work on iPhones.

He believed that OpenAI would have access to all data on an iPhone at all times.

Instead, Apple stated that ChatGPT will only get access to data like the user prompt, photos, or links only when a user allows Siri to use ChatGPT for a query.
