History of the American Buick GNX
The history of the Buick GNX

Kendrick Lamar shared the stage with a 1987 Buick GNX at his Super Bowl 2025 halftime show performance and fans of the all-American vehicle are here for it.

The limited-edition vintage Buick was there for a very special reason.

The GNX means a lot to the rapper, who not only named his most recent album after the vehicle, but also featured it on the cover.

Why? Well, Lamar has a few different reasons for why he loves the car so much.

Lamar shares a special love for the Buick GNX because he was born in the same year the car was released; 1987.

Not only that, the artist revealed his dad drove him home from the hospital as a newborn in a Buick Regal – the base car the GNX was built on.

So there’s a lot of history there.

Lamar kicked off his performance at the Apple Music 2025 Super Bowl halftime show on top of the GNX.

Seconds later, dancers came pouring out of the Buick, which is said to have been gutted on the inside specifically for the performance.

While Lamar owns a GNX himself, the vehicle he used in the halftime show wasn’t his.

He sourced it especially for the show, likely because he wanted to keep his in pristine condition.

The GNX stayed as a fixture on stage throughout the artist’s performance, which also guest starred artist SZA and actor Samuel L Jackson.

Unsurprisingly, the GNX didn’t go unnoticed by gearheads.

Viewers took to X to praise the artist for giving the limited-edition the spotlight it deserved.

“I don’t really listen to Kendrick, but I have extreme respect for his appreciation of the Buick GNX. That is a true enthusiast car!” one said.

“I don’t care if you like Kendrick Lamar’s music or not. Any man who makes a Buick Grand National the centerpiece of the Super Bowl halftime show is a superhero,” said another.

About the Buick GNX

The GNX, which stands for Grand National Experimental, was built to take on the Corvette and only 547 units were ever produced.

The limited-edition boasts a 3.8L supercharged, V6 engine which makes 245 horsepower.

It takes just 4.7 seconds to get from 0 – 60 and has a speed cap of 124 mph.

The Buick GNX usually sells for between $80,000 and $150,000 today.

But recently, one sold for as much as $205,000, so there’s a lot of love for the car.
