A man has bought a Honda Insight with almost a million miles on the odometer for one specific reason: to join the million-mile club.

David Andrew bought the 2002 EV hybrid Insight from its original owner on the condition that he kept it on the road – something he was more than happy to do.

The car currently has 1,581,222km (982,526 miles) on the clock so is tantalizingly close to hitting David’s goal.

The Honda Insight is nearing a million miles

The world’s highest mileage cars all belong to the exclusive and informal million-mile club.

The highest mileage vehicle of all time belonged to the late Irv Gordon who managed to clock up 3,250,257 miles (5,230,781km) in his Volvo P1800S.

More recently, a 2003 Honda Accord hit 1,000,000 miles on its original engine.

And now, David is hoping to join the club with his recent purchase of the 2003 Honda Insight.

The previous owner of the car could no longer afford the ‘downtime’ the car was causing and was hoping to get himself something more reliable.

However, he did hope ‘that it would go to someone who loved the car, would fix it up, and keep driving it’.

Thankfully, it did just that when it ended up in the hands of David.

He plans to invite the previous owner to see it hit the million mark

“Not being in the same position as him, I can afford the downtime, and I also have ‘insight’ from owning a handful of these silly cars and fixing them myself for next to nothing,” he told The Drive

“It’s just an old Honda, after all.”

David may also be interested to see what happens to the car’s odometer once it hits a million as there’s no space for a seventh digit.

Somewhat unusually for a million-mile club car, the Insight is a hybrid, which means there are potentially more things to go wrong with the vehicle than a car with a standard combustion drivetrain.

Nonetheless, David is set on hitting the one million mark and even has a plan for a special guest to join him.

“I also plan on inviting the previous owner to join me in the car for that milestone since he‘s the one who drove the car from 11,000 miles in 2004 to 982,000 last week,” he said.

“He deserves to be a part of this.”
