MG set the 2024 Beijing International Auto Show on fire as they unveiled their brand-new electric concept supercar – the EXE181.

It’s said to be a ‘tribute to speed and innovation – bridging heritage and future’.

But we’ll let you be the judge of that.

The history of MG

This hypercar concept is inspired by the 1950s land speed record car of the same name.

As the press release states, the MG EXE181 is ‘a nod to humanity’s quest for speed in the 20th century, bridging past and future in a dialogue across time’.

Throughout its history of carmaking, MG has always prioritized speed.

Early on, this manifested itself in racetrack success and speed records during the 1920s and 1930s.

Then, in the 1950s and 1960s, MG defined the Roadster with its mid-rear engine vehicles.

In fact it was the legendary ‘Roaring Raindrop’ MG EX181 that set an unprecedented speed record of 410.5 km/h (255 mph) in 1959 – which is where this new model gets its name.

Phil Hill, the driver, later became the first American F1 World Champion.

It was such a strong record that it wasn’t broken until 2014, when Bugatti finally managed to better it.

The MG EXE181

The MG EX181 marks a real step forward, both as a ‘monumental tribute and a pivotal step into the electrified frontier’.

Aiming for a top speed of 415 km/h (258 mph), it’s coupled with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.181 – this would make it one of the fastest electric cars in the world.

Proof, perhaps of MG dedication to redefining EV velocity, which it hopes will launch help the EXE181 get from 0-100 km (0-62 mph) in under a second.

The single-seat and aerodynamic design looks good as well as giving it a speed advantage.

Currently, the fastest accelerating electric car title belongs to the Japanese Aspark Owl.

Speaking of fast electric cars, Elon Musk has promised that the upcoming Tesla Roadster will go 0 to 60mph in under a second.

Back to MG concept and the car is driven by a yoke-style steering wheel with a built-in touchscreen.

Following its debut at the 2024 Beijing International Auto Show in China this April, it’s also set to appear at the Goodwood Festival in the UK this weekend.
