After rebuilding a Porsche Cayman S back from the brink of death to being capable of rivaling a GT4, the manufacturers called the project in for inspection.

This rebuild project saw this UK master get his mits underneath the wreckage of a Porsche Cayman S.

But after weeks of repairs, the car hit a final snag.

Porsche decided that the car needed yet another inspection before being road-legal, and this time, they shared little expense.

Restored Cayman S gets called back by Porsche

The UK mechanic Mat Armstrong has made an abundance of restoration projects that have become an issue with the manufacturers, specifically the recent Aston Martin DB12 in his garage.

This time, he’s been giving a Cayman S a complete makeover, having bought the damaged car for cheap.

In a series on his YouTube channel, which he claims ‘pushed his mechanical abilities to the next level,’ the Cayman S came from a scrap auction with nearly every part of the car being damaged.

But after replacing every element of the body, including the skirts and roof, the project neared completion and the now orange Porsche Cayman S looked to be ready to race.

However, Porsche intervened.

Ahead of its final checks to have its four wheels aligned, the manufacturers called for some more replacements for the car.

The garage insisted that a further £800 ($1,000) was to be forked out on an inner tie rod, support frame, and braces.

With a final cheque cleared though, the restoration project was finished.

Rebuilt Porsche Cayman S is quicker than a GT4

Throughout the repair process, Armstrong took a bit of influence from other Porsche bodies and actually ended up making a Cayman that was just as powerful as the GT4 on paper.

A usual Cayman comes with 344BHP, and the GT4 boasts 414.

But the rebuilt car cleared the usual figures and fell just shy of the GT, coming in at 409BHP.

The Cayman did end up having more torque too, which meant one thing: A race.

Thrust round a track, the Caymanm cleared the GT4 by a second (clocking in a time of 29 seconds).

On a straight-line drag race, the same result hit.

Armstrong had built a Cayman S that was much quicker than Porsche’s $70k racecar.

The Cayman S wouldn’t stay in his garage for long though, as it would be sold via a raffle competition run by High Speed Competitions – a company formed by the mechanic’s girlfriend – and would go to a new home soon.

The UK YouTube personality also recently flipped a flood-damaged Rolls-Royce Cullinan for half of its market price.
