Volkswagen wants to build an ‘XTREME’ off-road EV with 3D printed parts

Volkswagen is giving us a taste of what an electric VW off-roader could look like with its ID.XTREME concept.

Based on the ID.4 GTX, the company has already built one prototype which it has shown off to the ID. Drivers Club in Switzerland.

While the GTX is currently the highest-performing version of the ID.4, things are clearly turned up a notch here.

Volkswagen started by fitting massive off-road tires and relatively small 18-inch black wheels courtesy of OZ Racing.

There’s also a new front bumper with a nudge bar and a roof carrier with LED lights.

It also has a new spoiler at the back and larger wheel arches.

All of these new components are 3D printed using a mixture of carbon, resin, and plastic.

With this facelift, the car is now 50mm wider than the car it’s based on.

In terms of power, it uses the same electric underpinnings as the ID.4 GTX.

However, the electric motor has been tweaked to deliver more horsepower.

While the GTX has to make do with 295hp (220kW), the ID.XTREME delivers 382hp (285kW).

Thanks to the power upgrade, 0-97km/h (0-60mph) is dealt with in around four seconds.

Plus, its 82kWh battery pack gives it a range of around 580km (360mi).

That’s certainly enough for you to be able to take it on some decent off-road adventures.

It all looks and sounds very promising, however there’s no word on whether Volkswagen would actually build the ID.XTREME or something like it.

If the brand did, it would probably be quite expensive, costing more than the standard ID.4 GTX which is priced at around $72,000.
