A 21-year-old flight enthusiast bought himself a tiny biplane and attempted to fly it from North Carolina to California, but the landing was nerve-wracking.

Ben Lomov certainly had guts to take to the air on a trip that spanned more than 2,665 miles.

The plane in question was the Pitts S1-S, and it was a sight to behold in striking red and white.

But how would it be flying it from coast to coast?

Flying from North Carolina to California in a biplane

When it comes to traveling a great distance in a short span of time, you’d be hard pressed to find a better alternative than planes.

And even if the trip takes a little longer, that’s part of the adventure right?

A group of Americans took a plane 700 miles from Washington to New York, while a teen pilot flew solo to all seven continents.

Ben has that same adventurer spirit, but it certainly seemed like he was taking a lot of risks with his journey.

“[My plane] was basically designed for one thing, and that was crazy aerobatics.

“It basically sucks at everything else, especially landings,” he explained.

“To put it in perspective, imagine driving your car down the freeway but you can’t see anything out of the front windshield.

“And even worse, the car wants to spin and drive backward any chance that it gets,” he went on, clearly aware of the effort involved.

That, to be honest, doesn’t sound like a lot of fun.

Taking off from a small airport near Raleigh, NC, Ben was really putting his flight training to the test.

On the plus side, his journey provided him with some stunning views.

He didn’t do the whole journey in one, though, as he stopped over on the way, including in Texas and Arizona, among other states.

How did the landing go once he reached the West Coast?

Well, long before the landing, turbulence was a constant issue throughout the journey.

“When you’re flying a plane that only weighs 850 pounds, everything is magnified,” he said.

Fortunately, by the time he made it to California, he was flying over flat land, which made for a smoother journey.

It also meant he’d have ample landing space should something go wrong with the tiny biplane.

But how was the long-dreaded landing in Sacramento Mather Airport, CA? Well, Ben was there to tell the tale afterwards, so it definitely didn’t end badly.

Toward the end of his epic adventure, the YouTuber admitted to feeling a little bittersweet.

“I’m going to really miss it, I’ll remember it for the rest of my life,” he said:

In total, he spent 24 hours flying over 17 legs cross-country.

It’s an impressive feat and he was totally right when he said he’d remember this experience for the rest of his life.
