GM x Hyundai: Market changing move?

General Motors and Hyundai are two of the largest car brands in the world.

General Motors, is based in Detroit, Michigan, and is a giant conglomerate in its own right.

The company operates four of the largest American car brands, each of which serves as a sub-division of GM.

Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac are all subdivisions of General Motors.

In fact, up until 2008, General Motors was the largest car maker in the United States for 77 straight years.

Like GM, the Hyundai Motor Company is an impressive conglomerate in its own right.

The Seoul-based company owns 33 percent of Kia, as well as Genesis and its own electric sub-brand, Ioniq.

As of November 2024, Hyundai was the third-largest car company in the world by production.

They were only bested by Toyota and Volkswagen.

Companies to collaborate?

In reality, it should come as little surprise that the companies might be in talks.

The news, which was first reported by Reuters, outlines some interesting information.

According to the report, the two automotive giants have signed a memorandum of understanding.

The reports suggest that Hyundai will share two electric commercial vans with General Motors.

In return, General Motors could provide Hyundai with a pickup truck for the North American market.

At the moment, the only pickup offering from Hyundai for the North American market is the Santa Cruz.

Apart from this, the South Korean brand does not currently have any mid-range or large offerings.

The reports suggest that Hyundai could get a mid-range offering, similar in size to the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon.

Collab should come as no surprise

The global car market is in a state of flux at the moment, with Chinese EV makers pushing their way in.

As a result, sharing R&D, as well as products, is a very sensible option for both parties.

Hyundai has grown and increased its presence in the US, with talks ongoing about building a manufacturing plant there by 2028.

Additionally, General Motors has struggled with Chinese sales, so a collaboration with Hyundai would appear to make perfect sense.
