Plymouth: Modest brand, big success
Plymouth was established by Chrysler in July of 1928.
The brand was established with one goal – to compete in the low-cost market dominated by Chevrolet and Ford.
For most of its existence, Plymouth was a massive success, and was among the top-selling American car brands.
The budget division played a big role in helping Chrysler survive the Great Depression from 1929-1939.
The 1940s and 1950s saw Plymouth enjoy enormous sales success, regularly being extremely competitive with its budget-market rivals.

In the mid-1950s, Plymouth‘s entire model range got a dramatic update thanks to a designer called Virgil Exner.
Exner, who was Chrysler’s stylist, made Plymouth cars wider, longer, and lower.
The stylist created the “Forward Look” for the cars, modernizing them massively.
Exner’s work helped solidify Plymouth as one of the biggest car brands in the market, despite its modest price-tag.
Road Runner revives Plymouth
During the early 1960s, Plymouth started suffering from quality control problems, as well as styling excesses.
By 1968, Chrysler had decided to replace the Plymouth Belvedere.
The Road Runner was to serve as that direct replacement.
The muscle car icon made its debut in 1968, with the earliest models only available as two-door coupes.

The Road Runner came, as standard, with a 6.3-iter V8 that produced 335HP.
And the car would go on to be a monstrous success.
Because the brand understood the muscle car-mad market, they hit the jackpot with the Road Runner.
It was seen as amazing value for the petrolhead, with a huge amount of bang for your buck.
In 1969, the Road Runner was awarded the Motor Trend Car of the Year.
YouTuber gets gifted free muscle car
And that brings us to this story today.
Brett Hershey, who runs the YouTube channel Hershey’s Garage recently uploaded a very cool video.
In it, Brett receives a very unusual free gift.
Far from being a pair of socks or something like that, this gift was…a 1969 Road Runner.
But this is a long way from simply being any old Road Runner.
The first thing to note is that this particular example has an old roll cage fitted in the back.
It also has aftermarket front wheels, as well as a monster hood scoop adorning the engine.
There are also a pair of very old drag tyres keeping the rear of this car rolling.
What this is, then, is a converted drag racing Road Runner.
Brett does a walkaround of the car, analyzing the changes that had been made over the years.
He notes that someone had removed all of the factory wiring – the car now has a “very basic setup.”
The YouTuber concludes this video by promising much more content on this mysterious Plymouth Road Runner.
We, for one, cannot wait to learn more about the origins of this iconic muscle car.
