Carlos Sainz: A product of racing royalty
In case you don’t follow Formula 1, there’s a chance you might not know who Carlos Sainz is.
Well, allow us to introduce you to the man himself.
Those of an older generation might know his father, Carlos Sainz Sr.
Sainz Sr. is a two-time World Rally Championship champion, winning with Toyota in 1990 and 1992.
He also finished as runner up in the championship a further four times.
So, it probably comes as little surprise that Carlos Jr would follow in his father’s gas-fueled footsteps.
Sainz got his start in karting in 2006, competing in that series in 2010.
During that time, he was coached by the legendary Maria de Villota in Madrid.

After working his way up the ranks, the junior Sainz finally got his Formula 1 shot.
In 2015, Sainz partnered future world champion Max Verstappen at Scuderia Toro Rosso.
He then moved to McLaren F1 in 2019, spending two years there before heading to Scuderia Ferrari in 2021.
2022 saw Sainz finally get his maiden win, coming first in the wet at the British Grand Prix.
This past year has seen him move to the Williams Racing team, partnering Alex Albon.
Sainz’ not-so supercar re-emerges
In 2016, Sainz went viral during the Hungarian Grand Prix pre-race press conference.
During the presser, a reporter asked the drivers about their personal garages.
Naturally, given the nature of the sport, various incredible answers were given.
Responses ranged from a LaFerrari, to a Ferrari F40, and even to Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes 280 SL.
Then, it was Carlos’ turn to answer the question – and it was pretty brilliant.

“I drive a Golf”, said the then Scuderia Toro Rosso driver.
And Sainz was far from simply trying to be funny, either.
It turns out that, according to a recent vlog on his official channel, Sainz does, in fact, own a Golf.
In his video, Sainz explains his answer.
“It’s been sitting in a garage for five or six years without moving.”
Based on the video, it appears to be a Volkswagen Golf GTI, long considered the hot hatch standard bearer.
Frankly, we respect Sainz for staying true to his roots and keeping his much-beloved Golf GTI.
