Strange creation offered out of California didn’t sell as no one knew it was a 1987 Porsche 928
- This Porsche 928 didn’t sell when it went for sale at auction
- That partly might be to do with its redesign
- It was created by a company that ceased to exist in the 1990s

This strange creation from California didn’t sell, as nobody realized it was a 1987 Porsche 928.
It’s the creation of SpyderWerks, a company which hasn’t been around since the 1990s.
With an exterior closely resembling a Mazda MX-5, it is quite a remarkable sight.
But its quirky nature didn’t help it find a buyer when it went up for auction recently.

The 1987 Porsche 928 that is barely recognizable
It’s not uncommon to see unusual variations of cars.
Least of all the Porsche 928, which we have already seen in city car form in Brazil.
But we’ve also seen a Nissan GT-R front end fitted to a Stagea Wagon and a six-wheeled supercar.

But in the case of this Porsche 928, the design choices aren’t quite as glaring, but are still rather strange.
The harder edges of the 928 are gone, replaced with a more rounded design.
The headlights have also gone rounder, and the roof had been replaced with a convertible soft top.
It looks more like a Mazda MX-5 than it does a Porsche 928.
On the inside, relatively few changes have made.
A new Momo steering wheel has been fitted, and the door panels and dashboard have had some slight alterations made.

The V8 engine appeared to be the original, and there were only 5,714 miles on the clock, according to the auctioneer.
Why didn’t this car sell?
Even though a bid of $15,000 went in for this car, it ultimately didn’t find a buyer when it went for auction last week.
It seems pretty logical to figure out why this car didn’t sell.

Despite its low mileage and other qualities, it’s ultimately a Porsche that doesn’t look like a Porsche.
If you wanted a 928, you’d want the whole package, right?
In addition to that, the SpyderWerks creation was listed as a ‘restored salvage’, which would have made it even harder to sell.
Hopefully, it’ll be able to find a home one day.
Auctions can do a great job of pairing up prospective buyers with cars.
You only need to look at this guy who got his dream Ferrari after 34 years through an eBay auction, to see proof of that.
And even accidental purchases from auctions can lead to a happy ending, as happened with this man who came home with a Jaguar XJS after he’d gone hoping to get a Porsche 944.
