‘The only thing that matters is who’s behind the wheel’ is often true, and more so in this case of a stock 1990s Subaru Forester effortlessly climbing a hill that a heavy-duty truck failed at.

Yep — this Subaru Forester climbed a hill that other, more specialized cars could not.

It’s certainly not every day you see a ‘family car’ put performance trucks to shame.

But then again, older Subaru models had a lot more in store than they showed.

Old stock Subaru Forester climbs a hill effortlessly

In a video posted on the YouTube channel The Random Detour, a wild Subaru Forester came out of nowhere.

It was near what looked like an off-roaders’ car meet over a test hill in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, and it became the star of the show in no time.

You could say it came, it saw, and it conquered.

Now, the YouTube video’s description mentions that a dually diesel heavy-duty truck attempted to climb the hill and failed.

The Subaru Forester, however, made the climb without breaking a sweat and was on the top in a matter of seconds.

Newer trucks, like this Ford F-150 Raptor climbing a hill, might have it easier — but that doesn’t mean older diesels were not capable.

What’s more, it wasn’t a one-off coincidence, either.

Although the description mentions that its driver climbed more than once, you could only see it happen once.

It’s also essential to note that this video is now nine years old, so there weren’t exactly so many ‘extreme offroaders’ challenging each other everywhere.

The Forester was a true ‘sleeper’

While the climb wasn’t as steep as the one this Land Cruiser climbed, it wasn’t an easy thing to conquer.

Judging by its appearance, this might have been a first-generation facelift model from the late 1990s or the second-gen model that came out in 2002.

Depending on the year, it would have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a V6 of a similar spec.

Both variants had similar performance numbers, and the Forester from back then was quite powerful.

It could pull off around 165 horsepower and an impressive 166lb-ft of torque.

This was certainly a remarkable achievement for the Forester because, unlike newer models, it didn’t even feature a dedicated ‘X-Mode’ for off-roading you often see today.

Well, that’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Even Nicole Kidman drives one despite owning a Lamborghini.
