The supercar SUV space is heating up, with Ferrari confirming the mysterious upcoming Purosangue will have a V12 engine.

The SUV market has been massively successful for luxury car brands, and rival Lamborghini set a sales record last year in large part due to the success of the Urus.

The Urus sold nearly double the units of Lamborghini’s next best-seller, the Huracan.

Now he Prancing Horse is ready to carve out a slice of that market with the Ferrari SUV Purosangue.

The V12 engine option was confirmed in a recent earnings report by Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna.

Set to arrive later this year, the Purosangue will pack the same engine found in the brand’s 812 supercars.

“The Purosangue will be a naturally aspirated V-12, our iconic model,” Vigna said.

“We have been testing different options, but then, I think it was clear that to celebrate the bloodline, the performance, innovation, experience, the V12 and the experience and product performance it is able to deliver, is the right solution to push to the market. “

In addition to the earnings call, Ferrari’s media team has been quick to jump on Instagram and share a cheeky teaser of the engine we can expect to find in the SUV.

Performance stats are currently undetermined, but we would expect the Purosangue to be fitted with a detuned version of the 812’s V12 and could produce about 680 hp, similar to the FF and GTC4 Lusso.

What are the Ferrari Purosangue’s rivals?

Ferrari isn’t the only brand venturing into the SUV market for the first time, meaning the Purosangue will have some rather fierce competition.

Lamborghini Urus

The Lamborgini Urus is the obvious competitor to the Purosangue because it is another Italian supercar brand turned family SUV maker.

The Urus is powered by a beastly twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that produces 650hp and can launch itself from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds.

Not bad at all for a family car weighing more than two tonnes.

Lotus Eletre

The new kid on the block is the Lotus Eletre and it’s making serious waves in the industry.

It is an all-electric SUV that produces 592hp from its electric motor set up.

Like the other two above, the Eletre is the brand’s first SUV and therefore has a lot of pressure put on top of it.

Aston Martin DBX

No performance SUV competitor list would be complete without the mention of the Aston Martin DBX.

This is a luxury SUV that produces 542bhp and 700Nm of torque from its Mercedes-AMG derived 4.0-litre V8 engine.

This allows it to launch itself from 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds.
