A fully-enclosed flying car known as Pegasus E coming to the US is a mix between a helicopter and a go-kart.

Formerly based in Melbourne, Australia, the company behind Pegasus is moving its head office and production facilities to Las Vegas.

And you would be surprised to know that it’s a hybrid.

Pegasus E — flying car

Initially debuting in 2021, the Pegasus E flying car is a small, single-seat helicopter with automatic quick-fold rotor blades.

It also has a bare-bones open-wheel vehicle chassis attached with carbon fiber rods.

Just like some other flying cars, the Pegasus E also uses a hybrid drive system for a better range.

The hybrid system uses a lightweight ‘Pegasus 800’ two-stroke combustion engine that produces around 160 horsepower.

With a 265kg (585lb) weight, it doesn’t count as an ultralight VTOL.

However, with a full 60-liter (16-gal) tank, the Pegasus E flying car can fly for up to 3 hours.

It has a range of 420km (261 miles), which is a lot more than what other fully-electric eVTOLs can currently deliver.

Don’t underestimate its on-road capabilities either.

Despite its small wheels, the flying car can go 120 km/h (75 mph), and it could go faster but it has an electronic limiter to prevent that.

Flying and US regulations

This is not the only VTOL making its way to the US.

Even aircraft manufacturers like Boeing plan to sell flying cars by 2030.

US road regulations are much more lenient than the EU or Australia.

Due to that, Pegusus will most likely sell its three-wheel Pegasus Sports model as it can be categorized as a motorcycle.

However, the company is allegedly planning to sell the four-wheel, two-seat, side-by-side ‘Air Ferrari’ model.

Using a trademark name from a different car manufacturer is a bold and risky move.

But we will see how it plays out when it launches in 2025.
