Porsche has announced huge plans for its 718 Boxster and Cayman line-up and it involves electric power.

The German manufacturer said the mid-engine sports cars will be all-electric by 2025.

This update comes after a long period of uncertainty over what powerplant would replace the 718’s turbocharged flat-four engine.

“We are stepping up our electric offensive with another model. By the middle of the decade, we want to offer our mid-engine 718 sports car exclusively in an all-electric form,” Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said.

The specs for these revamped models are an unknown.

But you could expect the cars to be lighter than the Taycan, more agile, with potentially similar power outputs.

The Taycan is currently the only all-electric model offered by Porsche and accounts for about 14 per cent of global sales.

It is likely the all-electric Cayman and Boxster models will be based on the 992-generation 911 chassis.

That chassis has been set up to accommodate hybrid powertrains – so some adjustments will be needed.

With a shrinking demand for petrol-based sports cars, the shift to electric will most likely pay off in the next decade.

Porsche has previously said it expects 80 percent of global sales to be electric by 2030.

The German automotive giant has also stated it will invest more than a billion euros globally in wind turbines, solar energy and other climate protection measures.

“We don’t want to compensate, but to avoid. We don’t want to buy CO2 certificates from other companies, we want to avoid CO2-emissions wherever we can. Where energy cannot be saved, we use electricity from renewable sources,” Blume said.
