Back to the future delorean alpha5

The DeLorean is the most iconic car in movie history, so it’s a guarantee that the new Alpha5 electric model has some Back to the Future Easter eggs.

It’s been 40 years since the last DeLorean rolled off the factory floor after DMC went bankrupt in the 1980s.

And the new all-electric DeLorean Alpha5 is trying to capture the magic of the original – a throwback to the future if you will…

So let’s look at the key details of the Alpha5 that link the new car to Doc Brown and Marty McFly from the movie trilogy.

Obviously, we have those gull-wing doors. But one detail we loved that DeLorean listed in its big reveal this week was a speed stat.

In the movies, the DeLorean needs to hit 88mph (141km/h) before it can travel through time.

Luckily for those of us who grew up with those movies, DeLorean has told us exactly how long it will take the Alpha5 to hit 88mph – 4.35 seconds.

The Alpha5 has another nod to that Back to the Future number too.

There will be 88 models of the DeLorean Alpha5 released in the first run of production.

All the details of the DeLorean Alpha5

Although several attempts at creating a successor have been planned before, the Alpha5 is finally the real deal.

Set to be powered by a 110kWh battery, the 0-60mph (0-97km/h) sprint is predicted to take just 2.99 seconds.

The company is also targeting a range of more than 300mi (483km) and a top speed of 155mph (250km/h).

The DeLorean Motor Company that exists now is a different outfit from the John DeLorean-owned original that went bankrupt.

Based in Texas, the company has specialized in restoring original DMC-12s since 1995 when it acquired the rights to the brand and its records.

The new Delorean brand used Italian design house Italdesign to come up with the shape of the Alpha5.

It doesn’t have that angular wedge shape of the original, favoring more rounded edges that you’d find on modern supercars.

But the gullwing doors, those are staying.

The DeLorean Alpha5 will premiere at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Award ramp on August 18 and the Concept Lawn on August 21.

Supercar Blondie will also be at the Pebble Beach event, so stay tuned for all the details of the DeLorean Alpha5 and all the other incredible cars that will be there.
