The DeLorean is back after 40 years and now it’s an all-electric four-seater supercar.

Called the DMC Alpha5, the new DeLorean absolutely looks the part, sporting the iconic louvers and profile of the original.

But now it’s wrapped in a thoroughly modern EV package with preliminary specs that have us salivating.

Designed by famed Italian design house Italdesign, the connection to the original DeLorean is strong.

Although the original’s bare stainless steel bodywork isn’t an option, at least the gullwing doors are still present.

They’re massive, too, allowing for access to the front and rear seats which is a welcome new design feature.

The DeLorean Motor Company that exists now is a different outfit to the John DeLorean-owned original.

Based in Texas, the company has specialised in restoring original DMC-12s since 1995 when it acquired the rights to the brand and its records.

Set to be powered by a 110kWh battery, the 0-60mph (0-97km/h) sprint is predicted to take just 2.99 seconds.

The company is also targeting range of over 300mi (483km) and a top speed of 155mph (250km/h).

Hilariously, DeLorean also states a 0-88mph time of 4.35 seconds.

Safe to say that’s a fair sight faster than it took the original DMC-12 to hit time travel speed in Back to the Future.

Although several attempts at creating a successor have been planned before, the DMC Alpha5 is finally the real deal.

“We have been given the opportunity to re-imagine a brand that has meant so much to so many people from all corners of the globe for four decades,” DeLorean Motor Company VP Neilo Harris said.

“DeLorean has touched so many lives and set the stage for so many memories.

“We are all now witnessing a new chapter of this amazing story.”

The in-person debut of the DMC Alpha5 is slated for the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18.

There’s no word yet on whether a flux capacitor will be on the options list, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
