A car number plate has sold for a whopping $9.5 million – all for the 1 Billion Meals campaign.

During the Most Noble Numbers charity auction in Dubai, the AA8 plate sold for a staggering AED35 million (about US$9.5 million), which according to The National is the sixth most expensive in the world.

Other number plates sold at the weekend included F55 and V66 (AED4 million or US$1.08 million), and Y66 (AED 3.8 million or US$1.03 million).

At another auction for the same charity in Abu Dhabi, a single-digit plate with the number 2 sold for AED 23.3 million (about US$6.3 million) on Wednesday night.

All the money raised from the auctions will go towards the 1 Billion Meals campaign seeking to distribute food to vulnerable communities in more than 50 countries worldwide.

The campaign is organised by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI).

The distribution of these meals has already begun in Lebanon, India, Egypt, Jordan, Uganda, Angola, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan.

One potential buyer, who was eyeing off the AA8 plate, told it would look good on their Maybach and the auction could be “kind of unpredictable”.

They said the number didn’t have any significance to them, but reminded them “of the eight ball” from billiards.

Other notable number plate sales

  • 11 sold for AED5 million (US$1.4 million)
  • 10 sold for AED4.25 million (US$1.2 million)
  • 99 sold for AED1.7 million (US$460,000)

Aside from licence plates, phone numbers were also put up for auction in Abu Dhabi, where 547444444 sold for AED160,000 (US$44,000).

The winner of phone number 586222222 paid AED150,000 (US$40,000), while a bidder secured 581111114 for AED130,000 (US$35,000).
