When you think of a supercar, names that usually spring to mind include McLaren, Ferrari, Bugatti, and Koenigsegg.
However, one American supercar from 16 years ago has been largely forgotten despite being one of the fastest in the world.
The SSC Ultimate Aero TT came out in the mid-2000s, riding the wave of success that the Bugatti Veyron enjoyed.
Despite its speed and power, the Ultimate Aero TT has become a real enigma of the supercar world.

The SSC Ultimate Aero was a quiet addition to the supercar market
SSC was formerly known as Shelby SuperCars, although it has no affiliation with the late Carroll Shelby.
The SSC Aero entered production in 2004, quietly hitting the market before the Aero TT version arrived on the scene in 2007.
The original supercar had a 6.2-liter LS-based V8 under the hood, giving it a top speed of 249mph.

Powering the Aero TT was a 6.3-liter supercharged V8 that came from the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R race car.
That gave it an official top speed of 273mph.
However, its real speed was 18mph less than that, but whichever way you look at it, the supercar was fast.
What happened with the Ultimate Aero TT?
SSC only produced the Ultimate Aero TT for two years.
Its successor, the Ultimate Aero XT, didn’t arrive until 2013, so there was a big gap between the two supercars.
With such a short production run, SSC only produced a handful of them.
SSC in total produced just 24 Ultimate Aeros from the first run, and production of the Aero XT carried on until 2015.

Despite the short production runs, SSC wasn’t struggling to sell the cars or suffering from financial issues.
The whole aim of the project was to produce as fast a car as possible.
SSC also showed McLaren, Ferrari, Bugatti, and others, that they weren’t the only players in the game.
Sadly, its more famous rivals have ensured the SSC Ultimate Aero has become one of the more obscure creations from the performance car world.
