The new Bentley Flying Spur is adorned with a paint job that costs roughly the same as a Mercedes E-Class.

Dubbed Ombré, this type of paint was introduced with a limited-edition Continental GT a couple of weeks ago, and it’s now expected to become available, on request, for other models as well.

It looks sensational.

But the price tag is outrageous.

Why the Bentley Flying Spur Ombré paint job costs so much

Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, the Continental GT Speed that Bentley used to launch the new Ombré by Mulliner program is finished in a spectacular paint that blends black and blue.

Now, Bentley has launched a new Flying Spur with the same finish, and it looks even better.

Just like aforementioned Continental GT, the Flying Spur Ombré is finished with gradient paint that required 56+ hours of handcraft.

The process seamlessly blends two colors across the body, from Topaz black to Windsor Blue.

But there are two key differences when you compare the Flying Spur and the Continental.

First, the wheels.

The Continental is fitted with 22-inch wheels that combine black and blue, while the Flying Spur’s wheels are gloss black with no blue accents or details.

The second difference is evident when you open the doors.

While the Continental mixes light blue upholstery for the front seats and dark blue upholstery for the rear seats, the Flying Spur features black leather upholstery for all four seats.

For now, the Ombré option is available for the Flying Spur and Continental GT but, presumably, it’ll also be available for the Bentayga at some point.

There are only three options at launch.

Customers will be able to order the following Ombré options: Topaz Blue to Windsor Blue, Tungsten to Onyx, or Sunburst Gold to Orange Flame.

A very expensive optional extra

The Ombré paint option is one of the most expensive optional extras ever.

The catch is that this paint option starts at £48,000 – equivalent to around $68,000.

You can buy a brand-new Mercedes E-Class for that.

This may sound wild, but it’s more common than we think.

Back when it was still in production, the Porsche 918 Spyder was available with a paint option that cost $63,000.

More recently, a dealer in Dallas, Texas sold a Lamborghini Revuelto with a paint option worth $62,000.
