The Tesla Model Y is one of the most loved mid-sized SUVs in the EV world, and now one owner has really decided to put the car through its paces.
The driver, based in Canada, decided to test the EV’s ability to charge in extremely cold temperatures.
From pre-conditioning to heating the charging port, the creator described the process from start to finish.
Once the test was complete, he was left with a surprising end result.

This Tesla Model Y needed to charge in sub-zero temperatures
It’s that time of year again, when cold snaps are hitting many corners of the Northern Hemisphere, and over in Canada, one man decided to try and use the temperature to his advantage.
Content creator Left Coast EV needed to charge his bright red Tesla Model Y, so what better way to test the car’s true capability than seeing if it could cope in temperatures of -32.8°F.

He first left his home to drive to a Supercharger with 39 percent on the battery, but to enable the EV to charge properly, the battery needed to be preconditioned, which, of course, eats away at the charge.
In light of this, the Model Y system itself projected that when arriving at the Supercharging spot, the car would be left with nine percent of charge.

All in all, the journey took 43 minutes and left the car with two percent charge, which was less than expected due to extra preconditioning taking place to protect the EV’s battery system.

The results were in, and the Tesla Model Y’s charging speeds were revealed
You have to admit that -32.8°F is not the normal temperature that most EVs are used to when charging.
However, despite the treacherous conditions, the car seemed to defy expectations from the get-go.
Starting at two percent, the car needs to get to 50 percent safely.

“It’s climbing up there, I’m surprised that we’re getting such good speeds,” said the creator, as the kWh quickly surpassed 190.
Despite the icy, cold, and potentially dangerous conditions outside, the Tesla Model Y had no problem charging, and the only criticism that the creator had was that the connector was a bit tighter than he would have liked it to be.
Ultimately, he offered his advice on charging in the cold, and told other EV owners to ensure that they pre-condition the battery and heat up the charging port, and to do this often to keep the battery in good health.
So, there we have it – the Model Y can cope just as well in a Canada cold snap and the California sunshine.
