China has just introduced new EV batteries that could be swapped as quickly as filling up at a gas station.
These Choco-SEB batteries come from CATL, debuting in the Changan Automobile Oshan 520 EV.
The company behind the batteries claims it takes less than two minutes to replace them, which is an incredibly impressive achievement if true.
Replacing batteries and degradation is something that EV critics have long used as a reason not to buy an EV; however, this could well be game-changing for the automotive industry.

When CATL says it takes less than two minutes to replace a battery, they mean just 100 seconds.
That is very impressive, meaning it is as quick as refilling a gasoline car at a gas station.
The batteries also feature ultra-fast charging, and they are another sign of China’s lightning-fast gains in the EV segment.

The new technology has debuted in the Changan Automobile Oshan 520, with 1,000 already delivered.
Showing China’s progress, the Oshan 520 starts at the equivalent of $23,100 and has a range of 320 miles.
Like with the batteries themselves, those are some very impressive figures.
CATL says that the EV batteries can recharge to full in just 100 seconds, an incredible claim if true.
In terms of swapping the batteries, CATL has established 34 battery-swapping stations in Chongqing, Changan’s hometown.
The aim is to have many more swapping stations in a short space of time.
CATL is hoping that it will have over 50 stations completed in the city by the end of 2025.
Officials were invited to an event showcasing both the battery technology and the new Osahn 520.
This is where the rapid charging capabilities were showcased for the very first time.
Other manufacturers, GAC, Chery, NIO, FAW, and BAIC, are partnering with CATL to utilize its technology.
Manufacturers from the West will likely be watching these developments in China with great interest.

China has been rapid when it comes to improving its electric cars and the technology and hardware used.
Rapid charging and battery replacements are features that are currently unheard of in the rest of the world.
It’s another sign that China is set to become a world leader in the electric vehicle segment.
