Almost eliminating the need to charge your car, a Chinese EV company called Nio is flying through electric battery swaps in under three minutes, and has now set the world record with over 100,000 users in just one day.
Much of the anxiety surrounding EVs stems from the battery life and range, as few people want to take lengthy half-hour breaks to juice up.
But Nio is eliminating this process entirely by having specialist stations around China where its cars can simply roll in, swap their battery out, and zip off.
And it’s more popular than ever before.

How do battery swaps work in China?
When it comes to EV infrastructure, China is head and shoulders above the rest of the world.
While five-minute ultra-fast charging is still a prototype in the US, China has been turning around its EVs at this pace for a year.
But now this time frame is being chopped again, as new EV battery swap stations are allowing brands to keep their customers on the road without lengthy stops.
The stations, fitted with robots to unclip the battery holders, house up to 20 batteries and allow users to enter with flat power banks and leave with one full of life.

The process is unfamiliar in the US, with battery changes coming with $10,000 fees here.
But the cars are all built to allow for these battery swaps that don’t devalue your car.
One of the brands doing this is Nio, which has millions of cars on the road in China, including an electric sports car that rivals the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ for speed.
And they’re proving to be more popular by the day.

Chinese EV company Nio sets world record for most swaps in one day
Shortly after reaching its hundred-million uses mark last month, Nio has now announced that it set a record of 146,649 EV battery swaps in one day.
This comes as the Chinese EV company boasts 8,600 charging stations around the country, averaging just under 20 users at each station.
These numbers are only limited in this way due to the popularity of Nio cars, which shows the Achilles heel of this method of battery regeneration.
With BYD, MG, and Xiaomi being among its biggest rivals for EV distribution, these cars aren’t compatible with the battery changes.

But if Nio grows, so will the EV battery swapping system.
Tesla once piloted a scheme like this, but found the American market was too diverse to make use of them, and so the funds were poured into the Supercharger instead.
