This Chinese EV is outselling Tesla and BYD – but you’ve probably never heard of it.
Meet the Geely Geome Xingyuan, a compact hatchback that sells for under $10,000.
If China had a league table for EV sales, this car would be the top dog, beating out the Tesla Model Y and BYD Seagull.
‘Xingyuan’ translates to ‘source of prosperity’ and that’s a fitting way to describe this best-seller.

The Geely Geome Xingyuan – the Chinese EV outselling Tesla and BYD
According to retail data, the Geome Xingyuan sold 204,940 units in China in the first six months of 2025.
By way of comparison, the Tesla Model Y sold 171,491 units and the BYD Seagull sold 174,912 units.
As the only model to sell more than 200,000 units in the first half of 2025, the Geome Xingyuan was the best-selling car across all powertrains.

Whilst it’s been a juggernaut success story in China, its name is virtually unknown in North America and Europe.
At this time, Geely does not have plans to export the model into foreign markets.
But the car could potentially do very well in emerging markets in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Chinese cars – are they taking over the market?
Earlier this year, documents from the Chinese government indicated which car was tipped to take over the international market.
In that case, it was a plug-in hybrid called the Galaxy A7.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the rise of cars from China.

Great Wall Motor (GWM), for example, set the supercar world alight earlier this year.
The Chinese brand claimed that it is aiming to take Ferrari’s supercar crown in the near future.
And BYD has very much been flying the flag for China in the EV world.
That’s not forgetting Li Auto Motors.

With a majority of American carmakers predicting that Chinese cars will make it over to the US market, it’s only a matter of time before they make it stateside.
And it’s anyone’s guess how that will all play out.
