This expert explained why used Honda and Toyota cars are so expensive compared to other brands.

TikToker Rudy of rudycars2 did a deep dive into this seemingly inexplicable trend.

He said it was a question he was constantly fielding, from prospective buyers who were baffled by sky-high prices on pre-owned cars.

So for the benefit of his viewers, he broke down why this was the case.

Why are used Honda and Toyota cars so pricey?

“People ask me, ‘Rudy, is it worth even buying a pre-owned Toyota or Honda? Is it worth all that money?’” he said.

“And my answer is yes, ’cause you’re buying a high-quality product.”

At the root of Rudy’s argument is durability.

He made the case that Toyota and Honda cars are good investments, because the engines in many last ‘300, 400,000 miles’.

And it’s not just his assessment that indicates this is the case.

In iSeeCars’ Longest Lasting Cars study, Toyota took the top spot and Honda came in second.

Both brands are disproportionately represented among cars that have hit a quarter-million miles, motor1 reported.

These cars last a long time – as the new Prime Minister of Japan knows all too well with her Toyota Supra.

It also doesn’t hurt that Toyotas and Hondas are frequently ranked as having great resale value.

So when you take into account a long life and retained value, it’s no wonder that these two brands clock in with high prices when being sold as used vehicles.

Ultimately, Rudy felt that the higher price was worth it for a used Toyota or Honda.

The complicated world of the used car market

It may surprise you to learn that used car sales outpace new car sales by a considerable margin.

One report suggested that 39.4 million used cars were sold in 2018, compared to 17.3 million new ones.

Given that it’s cheaper, it shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise to us.

Is it any wonder that Amazon is getting in on the used car market?

Still, there are things to watch out for when bagging yourself a bargain.

One mechanic laid out six used cars that buyers should steer clear of.

While this Mercedes saleswoman said that young people shouldn’t buy $25k used luxury cars.
