Always first to an exclusive, Jay Leno owns a Dodge so rare that he’s never met anybody who has even heard of someone owning it.

The car in question is a 1954 Dodge Suburban, and it looks like a little slice of 1950s car heaven.

It’s stunning, it’s retro, and it runs like a dream.

But if it’s so good, why is it seemingly so rare?

Taking a closer look at the 1954 Dodge Suburban

Leno’s already got an array of rare cars sitting in his garage, but even this 1954 Dodge Coronet Suburban manages to stand out.

As the former late-night television host tells it, this car stood out to him at a car show.

It had the 241 ‘Red Ram’ Dodge Hemi, producing 150hp in a 3,4000Ib car.

“The complete lack of safety equipment of any kind allows you to get a good power-to-weight ratio,” Leno said.

“Because you’ve got no airbag, no door-guard. This thing’s a beer can.”

And what a pretty beer can it is.

The exterior is finished in stunning turquoise, with teal seats inside the cabin.

It’s the sort of car you’d be proud to show up to the drive-in theater in.

For Leno, this Dodge is a literal example of a joyride.

“You can’t be depressed and drive this car,” he stated.

“The only modern concession we’ve made to this car is adding seatbelts.”

Why was this car so rare then?

Well, the two-door offering of this car was scarcely produced, with only 9,489 units being rolled out in 1954.

That figure doesn’t offer up a lot of chance of survival into the present day.

If there’s one thing you can count on Jay Leno for, it’s cool cars

Celebrities are known for enjoying their cars; there’s no question about that.

But even on that metric, Leno stands heads and shoulders above the rest – there’s a good reason that his car collection is the third most popular with Google searchers, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo and Bill Gates.

But don’t think that his collection is a bunch of garage queens; Leno gets use out of each of them.

He may have some stiff competition from his buddy Tim Allen, who demonstrated his car knowledge in a segment on Leno’s show.
