July 2025 was almost the biggest ever month for US EV sales on record

July 2025 nearly set a record for the most EV sales in a month in the United States.
In July 2025, 130,000 people took delivery of a brand-new EV.
It’s a significant year-on-year increase.
But it wasn’t the best month ever.

The likely reason behind this surge in EV sales
Over 130,000 EVs were delivered to new buyers in July 2025, which is very nearly a record, and it’s a huge surge when we compare it to the same month last year.
For reference, ‘only’ around 104,000 motorists bought an EV in July last year.
This means this was a 20 percent year-on-year increase compared to July 2024.
It wasn’t the best month ever – that record still belongs to December 2024 – but it was close.
In December 2024, 136,000 people bought EVs.
The ‘almost’ record was probably driven by the fact that both people and dealers – and of course automakers – are desperately trying to take advantage of the federal EV tax credit before it’s discontinued.
The federal EV tax credit will expire for vehicles purchased or leased after September 30, 2025, which means we can reasonably expect August to be equally buoyant for dealers and automakers who sell electric vehicles.

EVs are still being received with mixed feelings
There are countries that are clearly not particularly on board with EVs, and countries that have fully embraced the transition.
Norway, for example, is a place where gas cars are nearly extinct.
By contrast, buyers in the United States are still on the fence.
You’ve got plenty of states where very few people buy EVs, and states like California, where around two in 10 cars are electric, despite the fact that it wants to ban Tesla, apparently.
Interestingly, you also have states where both things are true.
Texas is a classic case in point.
The Lone Star State has the highest EV adoption rates in the country, but that’s mostly driven by its large cities, especially Austin.
