This mom was in for a heck of a surprise when she let her son use her card to buy GTA V back in 2013 – and ended up winning a custom Dodge Viper in the process.
If ever there was a story that would make you ask, ‘Why couldn’t this happen to me?’, this would be it.
Cheri Parker let her son buy the video game back in 2013, and was entered into a nationwide sweepstakes in the process.
This North Carolina mom ended up becoming the surprise winner of a custom Dodge Viper in a twist worthy of a Hollywood film.
We’ve all heard of video game extras, but a Dodge Viper is something else altogether
Cast your minds back to 2013, and you’ll no doubt remember the hype that surrounded the release of GTA V.
You only need to look at the current buzz building up around its follow-up – which is projected to make over $1 billion in preorders alone – to understand the feeling at the time.
Upon release in September 2013, GTA V earned $1 billion in its first three days, breaking industry sales records and becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history.

Caught up in all that fanfare was a mom from Havelock, North Carolina, and her son.
Cheri Parker had allowed her son to use her card to purchase the game, likely not thinking much of it.
Unbeknownst to her, Parker’s son had won a real-life version of the Banshee, a car featured in the game.
Since the game’s purchase was made on her card, she became the legal owner.
The Bravado Banshee, based on the Dodge Viper SRT10, was made by West Coast Customs.

As you might expect, photos of this surprised mom and her new set of wheels went around the world.
The 56-year-old mom and grandmother isn’t exactly the stereotypical supercar driver, after all.
“It was very out of the blue…I didn’t believe it for a minute,” Parker told Barcroft Cars.
“I thought it was a scam.”
But the car wouldn’t be sticking around for too long.
What happened next to this GTA V car?
Both mother and son enjoyed having the car; there’s no doubt about that.
“The best thing about owning the car is that it’s very fun to drive,” Parker said.
“It’s very fast, and it turns a lot of heads wherever you go.
“I get tickled when people speed up to see who’s driving the car and see a 56-year-old woman behind the wheel.”
But there was a big downside, and that was cost.

And despite the star quality of the car, Parker preferred a more ‘practical’ mini SUV.
As a result, the family decided to sell the car – but even that wouldn’t prove to be easy.
One unsuccessful listing on eBay in 2014 had an asking price of $170,000, but didn’t snag any buyers.
On January 30, 2015, it would sell for the considerably lower price of $80,100, RoadAndTrack reported.
Parker said she intended to put the money towards her son’s college education.
