Toyota has introduced a liquid-hydrogen hypercar concept to the Le Mans 24 Hours, showcasing its capabilities as an alternative to electric supercars.

The Japanese manufacturer has won Le Mans four times from 2018 to 2021, with Ferrari winning the last two editions.

The race loves to showcase the latest in technological advancements. This new hydrogen concept is a potential glimpse into the future of top-level endurance racing.

Toyota has in the past been reluctant when it comes to electric car development, making the introduction of this hydrogen hypercar seem like perfect sense.

The concept is the GR LH2 Racing Concept, and it uses the current GR010 hypercar as its basis.

Toyota is hoping that the concept will act as a preview of what endurance racing, and motorsport in general, could look like in the future.

In 2024, Toyota unveiled the GR H2 concept, and this is an evolution of that idea.

Like last year’s concept, Toyota has not revealed any technical specifications for its latest idea.

Given that it is based around the existing GR010 hypercar, however, it should be able to run the Circuit de La Sarthe in a similar amount of time.

The Japanese manufacturer itself has said that this new concept is a test car.

Toyota went on to say it could be used to ‘advance the development of hydrogen technology in motorsports.’

Future propulsion in motorsports is an interesting subject.

Formula E, of course, uses fully-electric race cars.

But it has struggled to gain a massive audience, and several manufacturers have pulled out in recent years.

This included BMW, Audi, and BMW who all exited at roughly the same time.

Renault has also quit the series, although it’s represented via its alliance with Nissan.

Formula 1, meanwhile, is using 1.6-liter turbocharged-hybrid V6 engines that it first introduced in 2014.

The new car from Toyota suggests we may get a hydrogen series at the top level of motorsport at some point.

Based on its current Le Mans hypercar, the GR LH2 may have around 670hp, with the GR010 using a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine.

The car will be on show at this year’s Le Mans 24 hours.

So keep a lookout for it if you are attending this iconic event.
