Despite us all believing it was dead, Nissan looks to be working on an all-new R36 GT-R supercar.

The future of the GT-R has been the subject of much speculation, with the R35 generation set to disappear very soon as Nissan retires the model.

But the company’s new CEO has dropped hints that an R36 GT-R is very much on the cards, which is an exciting prospect for automotive fans.

The R35 was a huge hit around the globe, and the chances are any successor would do just as well for Nissan.

Nissan’s new CEO is a real automotive enthusiast

Incoming CEO Ivan Espinosa is a real enthusiast, something that will put the company in a good place.

It also means he really cares about the company’s cars, as well as the financial side of the operation.

Speaking to Automotive News, Espinosa referenced the R36 rumors and said making sports cars is ‘part of (the company’s) DNA.’

While not specifically saying an R36 is coming, the CEO did say the GT-R name ‘will exist into the future.’

That’s as clear a sign as any that we could get a new R36 – at least that’s the hope.

The company could equally, however, do a Ford.

The American manufacturer took its famous Mustang name and used it on the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV.

But there’s hope among fans that we will see a new R36.

Nissan is still committed to sports cars

Even though EVs are the flavor of the month right now, Nissan is still committed to sports cars.

Not only has it kept the R35 GT-R going for as long as possible, but it’s also introduced a new sports car.

This was, of course, the new Nissan Z, the latest in the Z/Fairlady range.

The new Z is packed with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, making 400HP.

Hopefully, a new R36 would be able to eclipse those figures and take up the mantle from its predecessor.

There is, of course, also the chance that the R36 could be the company’s first all-electric sports car.

However, that might not be a popular move among hardcore enthusiasts.

It’ll be fascinating to see just what the manufacturer has up its sleeve.
