Honda is known for making some of the best cars and motorcycles in the world.

What you might not know is that it also produces aeroplanes.

One pilot has released a YouTube video explaining the cost of owning a private Honda plane.

And it’s eye-watering money before you even lift-off.

Honda: Reaching for the sky

The Honda Aircraft Company has an extremely fascinating origin story.

Honda’s aircraft exploration began as a top-secret research division in 1986 within Honda R&D.

Michimasa Fujino had joined the Japenese company’s motor division in 1984, but after two years, he was reassigned to the aviation division.

The first concept for the HondaJet was developed in 1997, right before the Aircraft Division relocated to North Carolina from Japan in 2000.

In 2015, the Japanese company received type certificates for the Honda HA-420 light jet.

The company made its first deliveries of the jet on December 23rd, 2015.

YouTuber reveals cost of owning Honda Light Jet

Recently, one YouTuber revealed the cost of owning the HA-420 as a private jet.

In a video for the MojoGrip YouTube Channel, Gregory Gorrell, a private pilot, revealed the costs of owning and flying the private jet.

Straight off the bat, Gregory made a very interesting point.

Because the Japanese jet is a twin-engine plane, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) places important requirements on people before they can fly the plane.

As you’ve probably guessed, it’s also extremely expensive to meet these requirements.

Gregory said that in order to fly this plane, he needed a Type Rating.

And to get a Type Rating you have to go through an intensive two-week class, as well as special flight simulator training.

And the cost of all of this training? $50,000.

Ouch.

Why is it so expensive to fly this plane?

Essentially, there’s one key reason why it is so expensive to pilot this plane.

Not only do you have to be supervised by the FAA and instructed to ATP standards, but there’s another problem.

There’s only one simulator of this kind in the world.

Gregory points out that getting a Type Rating to fly other types of aircraft can be much cheaper.

For some Type Ratings, it can be as low as $15,000.

Gregory said this was why it was so important to consider the costs of crew when flying a private jet.

Finding a crew with the Type Rating to fly the Honda HA-420 light jet can obviously prove incredibly difficult.

So we think we’ll stick to flying commercial, thanks.
