Blink and you might miss it, as the Smart car brand has just quietly dropped the Smart #6, under the watchful eye of Chinese car manufacturer Geely.

Far from being just another car release, the #6 is already turning heads.

Once famous for cars that looked like toys, the carmaker has come a long way from its microcar roots.

After spending decades carving out a niche with ultra-compact city cars, the company is now trying to prove that small doesn’t have to mean limited.

Smart is branching out into different types of cars

Originally born as a city-mobility experiment backed by Mercedes-Benz, the Smart car brand made its name with icons like the Fortwo and later the Forfour.

While many car manufacturers focus on speed or luxury, Smart made its selling points all about urban life, tight parking spaces, and standing out in a sea of homogeneous hatchbacks.

That identity could have boxed the carmaker into irrelevance as tastes changed, but the brand instead chose reinvention.

Enter Geely, the Chinese automotive giant that also oversees Volvo, Polestar, Zeekr, and Lotus.

Under Geely’s stewardship, Smart has fully embraced the electric era and bulked up.

Today’s lineup includes the #1 crossover, the sleeker #3 SUV, and the flagship #5, all far removed from the tiny Fortwo in both size and ambition.

The brand is also planning a return to its roots with an all-electric #2 due around 2026, although the internet can’t stop laughing about it.

Very similar to another Geely product

But before that, there’s a new gap to fill.

That’s where the Smart #6 comes in.

Recently cataloged by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the #6 is the Smart car brand’s first true sedan and a clear signal that the brand wants a slice of one of China’s hottest segments.

It’s reportedly based on the Zeekr 007, another Geely product.

However, the car has also drawn comparisons to the Xiaomi SU7, a sedan so popular that Xiaomi has to produce a new unit every 76 seconds to keep up with demand.

Design-wise, the #6 features sleek proportions, continuous front and rear light bars, and Smart’s badge proudly centered.

Buyers can expect 19- or 20-inch wheels depending on trim, along with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor that hints at advanced driver-assistance tech.

Power comes from a 1.5-liter plug-in hybrid producing 160 horsepower, and there’s even an automatic rear spoiler that stays hidden until higher speeds demand it.

While it’s unclear how the Smart #6 will perform, its parent company Geely is known for making pretty savvy decisions.

After all, this is the carmaker responsible for the best selling vehicle in China in the first half of 2025.
