Flying drones making the Doge dog in the sky while people in the crowd hysterically weep with excitement is kind of exactly what you’d expect from an Elon Musk Tesla event.

That’s how the ‘Cyber Rodeo’ began in Austin, Texas – an event to launch the new Tesla Gigafactory.

About 15,000 people showed up for the mega-event as the world’s richest person showed off his brand new facility.

But what we really wanted to see was an update on the Cybertruck, and Musk delivered.

“We’re going to smash the window again,” he said to raucous cheers from the crowd.

But no, there was no hammer this time. But we did get a good look at the latest prototype.

The updates to the Cybertruck include it now having no door handles.

He confirmed the hotly anticipated Cybertruck production will be next and “it will be epic”. It will be coming next year.

“It will be in production with Roadster and with Semi… so that’s all coming.”

The Cyber Rodeo

Musk rocked up in a giant cowboy hat and dark mirrored sunglasses to Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg booming across the factory floor.

“This year is all about scaling up and then next year there will be a massive wave of new products,” the billionaire said.

And the new factory itself, well it’s a massive operation.

The building is 15 city blocks in length and would be taller than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

Musk also said a robot taxi was on the way.

Tesla’s new Texas factory a key for growth

The $1.1 billion factory in Austin will ease the pressure on production caused by China’s most recent COVID-19 outbreak.

The lockdown in Shanghai, a city of 25 million people, was extended indefinitely on Monday as cases skyrocketed.

The Tesla factory in Shanghai has been forced to shut down. It’s a key export hub for Tesla and the Shanghai factory reportedly pumps out 6,000 Model 3 and 10,000 Model Y cars per week when it’s operational.

So the new Gigafactory will alleviate some of the pressure by ramping up vehicle and battery production.

“We’re really entering a new phase of Tesla’s future with six giant factories,” Musk said at the Cyber Rodeo.

The Tesla founder said he chose Austin because he “ran out of room” in California and “there’s no place like Texas”.

There’s also a new Berlin factory, and combined these two new additions will double the company’s annual production to two million vehicles.

Tesla will use giant casting presses at the factories which will cut down costs and time spent building cars.
