After a little bit of back and forth, both the Tesla Model S and Model X are apparently being discontinued this year.

The manufacturer has done this before.

But this time it feels like a ‘real’ goodbye.

And it has to do with robots.

Tesla release statement on Model S and Model X

Last year, the manufacturer unveiled upgraded versions of both, and then discontinued both.

Seemingly for no reason.

This time, it feels a little more ‘real’.

The American automaker took to X to share a message that leaves very little to imagination.

“As we shift to an autonomous future, Model S & X production will wind down next quarter. If you’d like to own one of them, now’s a good time to place your order. Tesla wouldn’t be what it is today without Model S & X and their early owners – thank you for your support over the last decade,” the message read.

It feels definitive, and it probably will be.

Then again, with Musk, you never know.

Why Tesla is discontinuing the Model S and X

To be fair, Elon Musk has often said that Tesla is a robotics company that just so happens to make cars, and he also said that autonomous cars are the priority now.

The company is now focusing on other things – including FSD (Full Self-Driving) – and Model S and X aren’t a priority anymore.

Evidently.

The other elephant in the room is the fact that sales numbers don’t lie.

Model Y sells well, and Model 3 also does, but Model X and S weren’t really pulling their weight.

Even so, it’s still the end of an era.

Especially for Model S which, lest we forget, was actually the first ‘modern’ Tesla model after the original Roadster.
