In a clash of the titans of modern technology and engineering, the Xiaomi SU7 ultra was pitted against the electric force of a Tesla Model S Plaid, and the drag races that followed were as wild as you can imagine.

The Tesla Model S Plaid has long dominated the straight-line racing world.

As the epitome of what EV engineering can achieve, it has been leaving combustion cars in the dust.

But as EV engineering has produced more challengers, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has emerged as its biggest rival – and now, they’ve gone wheel-to-wheel.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra shares drag race spoils with Tesla Model S Plaid

As we said, the Tesla Model S Plaid has been a dominant force in drag races, defeating notorious opponents like the McLaren 765.

But the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is set to be the next kid on the block, and has already taken on European royalty from Mercedes and Porsche.

So, who would win if these two titans collided?

Well, Carwow did just that, putting them on a quarter-mile strip and letting cars be cars.

In a best-of-nine heat, both cars had notable highlights, as the Tesla Model S Plaid accelerated best and proved to be the leader in a cat-and-mouse chase.

Sometimes, Tom would catch Jerry, while at other times, the Model S would hold on to take victory in sub-ten-second sprints.

However, in a winner-takes-all final round, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra harnessed everything that its battery could provide and flew across the line in 9.3 seconds to win the race.

There were a few hindrances, too, as the Chinese car wasn’t wearing its best boots.

The semi-slick tires were a notable difference, creating wheelspin as the Tesla Model S Plaid zipped off the line much, much quicker. On a rolling start, there was only one clear winner, as the tires were already rolling. It also hit a maximum power limit for overheating twice.

This isn’t the first time that these cars have raced either, and previous results went in the direction of a race-ready Xiaomi.

How quick is the Chinese EV?

Well, having usurped the Model S Plaid, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has instantly become the new bar that carmakers are aiming for; so much so that Ferrari is using the car as an example of how to build its upcoming EV.

But its speed is actually unparalleled.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra isn’t just a straight line merchant, but is actually better on the track, and has shattered supercar records around the fabled Nürburgring.

It beat its own record in a historic lap around the track, putting even more distance between itself and the likes of the Rimac Nevera.

In fact, its only true competition nowadays is its sister, the YU7 GT.

Over in China, cars are getting faster and faster, with the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra holding the record around the German track and the Yangwany U9 Xtreme being crowned the fastest car in the world in terms of top speed, overtaking the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport.
