Despite losing ground to new EV brands around the world, the Tesla Model Y is still leading the charge in California, as it is revealed to be the state’s best-selling vehicle by a huge margin.

Different states throughout America tend to lend themselves to different driving habits.

The likes of snowy Minnesota and the hot springs of Utah are best-suited to tried and tested trucks from Ford, while smaller suburban states like New York are all about efficiency.

But out in California, the jack-of-all-trades Tesla Model Y has showcased why it’s still one of the best vehicles in the world.

Tesla tops sales charts in California with the Model Y

Although it has lost its crown as the best-selling EV brand in the world, at the hands of BYD’s European dominance, Tesla isn’t slowing down.

In fact, studies in 2025 have completely debunked the thought that Tesla might be struggling, as it broke its sales records in Q3.

That’s mainly thanks to the Tesla Model Y and its refreshed model, which has prompted upgrades and incentivized new EV switchers.

So much so that the popular model has obliterated its competition in flagship states like California.

New reports showcase that the Model Y sold 110,120 in California throughout 2025, which nearly doubles its closest competitor in the Toyota RAV4.

The Toyota Camry and Model 3 came in third and fourth, respectively, showcasing the overwhelming dominance of the two brands, specifically Tesla.

Why the Tesla Model Y is so popular

The Model Y has proven to be a fantastic car; it usually only loses out on sales through its premium price.

It’s why the Chinese EVs have soared around the globe, undercutting Tesla significantly.

But over in Cali, the Silicon Valley gurus and celebrity-chasing lifestyle leave people with a bit more spare change to invest in a car like the Model Y.

Some Californians have reported successes with their Model Y purchases, too, with one person claiming the newer models are the most comfortable rides on the market.

Another installed a paint protection film, or PPF, on their Model Y, to showcase how people in the Golden State can enjoy their colorful cars without worrying about them fading in the heat.
